- Cape Town: Double Storey Books. Clearly, the global HIV epidemic has placed unique strain on corporations and other employers. The South African situation described in this paper, while unique in its catastrophic intensity, is not dissimilar to what companies now face or may soon face in many countries where HIV incidence has climbed past the "5 percent" propagation threshold defined by epidemiologists. In ethical terms, the South African firms already have clear instrumental arguments to intervene: workers are sick and dying, training and recruiting costs are up, workplace morale is harmed. At Anglo American, savings from its HIV program investment now yield a positive return on investment, up from 70 cents on the dollar in 2005; other companies may also find that their programs yield a net savings.
