The shift can be detected by optically mixing the Doppler-shifted light with light similarly scattered from another particle (homodyne detection), or with an unshifted reference source (heterodyne detection). This last possibility is highly unlikely to occur in a gel due to the appreciable viscosity of the dispersion.

    • We have in our laboratory recently completed a similar study on cold cataract for the bovine lens. In contradiction with, we were able to record reliable correlation functions up to 10°C without the problem of lens opacification as pointed out by Tanaka and Benedek.
