The patients who formed stones had decreased urine volumes, citrate levels, and increased calcium excretions. These findings suggest that metabolic and dietary factors may play a role in bladder stone formation in patients after enterocystoplasty.

A case series of four patients with bladder cancer following gastrocystoplasty. Three patients had gastric carcinoma of the stomach patch. This series suggests that gastrocystoplasty may result in high tumor development of the bowel patch.

This series of two patients with gastric adenocarcinoma following gastrocystoplasty again suggests that this bowel segment may have an increased predisposition to malignancy. The authors report that only two of 72 patients were affected but recommend a screening protocol including annual imaging, cystoscopy and biopsy in patients 5 years following gastrocystoplasty.

37. Austin JC, Elliot S, Cooper CS. Patients with spina bifida and bladder cancer: atypical presentation, advanced stage, and poor survival. J Urol 2007; 178: 798-801. This series of eight adult patients with spina bifida and bladders shows that bladder cancer can occur in patients in the absence of bladder augmentation. The cancers are atypical in presentation and usually advanced at presentation. Survival was poor. Review of prior published cases reveal that only 37% have undergone bladder augmentation and median age of patients is 35 years.
