Retrospective review of 182 anatomic segmentectomies showed excellent surgical outcome with negative margins and low operative mortality. The long-term outcome of this group compared favorably with outcomes after lobectomy, especially when adequate margins were obtained.

Eur J Cardio-Thorac Surg 2007; 31:522-527. Outcomes of 209 patients who underwent complete resection of stage IA nonsmall lung cancer were compared: 49 underwent segmentectomy, 150 underwent lobectomy. The outcome was similar for the subgroup with tumors less than 2 cm; local recurrences were more common in larger tumors and those close to the hilum.
