Eighteen months prior to Burnell and Cole's visit, the PS Moolgewanke played an important role in the Victoria Exploring Expedition, shipping eight tons of stores and equipment belonging to the Expedition up the Darling River from Albemarle Station, owned by Joseph and John Phelps, to Menindee. See T. Bonyhady, Burke and Wills from Melbourne to Myth (Sydney, 1991), p. 99.

Mueller, op. cit., p. 6. Mueller gives Cole's place of residence as Castlemaine where he had lived since arriving in Australia in 1852. At the completion of his Murray River journey, Cole returned to Melbourne where he eked out a living until starting his book business in 1865 (Turnley, op. cit. [n. 40], p. 28).
