Due to the fact that the first version of the CIS is not carried out equally in all the European countries we had to exclude a high number of them. For example in Belgium they analysed business units instead of firms. A broad analysis of these methodological problems is made in J. Molero, M. Buesa, A. Hidalgo and L.J. Heras (1998) Análisis metodológico de las encuestas de innovación europea y española. Informe de investigación No. 1. Instituto de Análisis Industrial y Financiero. Universidad Complutense. We repeated such an analysis, excluding different variables significant for the models presented in Table 1, to look at the consequences for other variables, not only to control the problem just mentioned but also because such control models are a good way of controlling the problem of colinearity. Furthermore we repeated the model several times excluding at random 10% of the cases as another way to control the robustness of the models
