Interviews from 2004 included eighteen men and fourteen women, thirty white, two Black: five men who are former miners (four white, one Black); one white woman former miner; three white coal-related business men, one of whom is also a former miner; ten white environmental activists, three of whom were men; three government officials, two of whom were white men and one a Black woman; three white men environmental protection agents; and eight other community members, all white: the wife of a coal-related business owner, the wife of a former miner, two men and two women educators, a woman working as a cleaner for a local retailer, and a man who is a retired business owner.
