This is a report with recommendations from a ECVAM workshop. Current mechanistic knowledge of chemical respiratory allergy and available prediction methods are reviewed. The leading recommendations are further exploration of a structure-activity relationship model and the utility of the local lymph node assay followed by in-vitro peptide binding assays and cell-based methods. It recognizes the value of determining 'the sequential, algorithmic use of different test methods, in order to maximize their utility and efficiency'.
