    • I thank the reviewers for suggesting ways to develop the argument for this claim. Notice the shift from what parental love calls for with respect to one's present child to what it calls for with respect to one's future child. When we speak of one's future child, we are not speaking of any particular individual in the sense that we might speak of a particular individual who already exists or has existed.

    • The Generality of Predictions
    • It may seem odd to speak of love for some child or other, later on. However, because the ideal of unconditional parental love is conditioned only on the child being your child, and not on any more specific characterization, all we need to refer to here is whatever child you may later have.

    • Procreative Beneficence: Why We Should Select the Best Children
    • at page 415. Savulescu argues that we need this claim to explain why it is wrong to create necessarily impaired worthwhile lives. This seems plausible, though the argument works from the intuition that it is wrong to create such lives but does not argue for that intuition. Moreover, it is subject to the objection that, although many people believe we should not create impaired lives, it is much more controversial to say that we should - if we are creating at all - create the best lives we can.
