    • It is important to realize that the electrons are not spin-polarized in the initial state in the case of nonmagnetic materials, and it is the excitation process goverened by relativistic symmetry selection rules that populates final states with a defined spin character. For instance, such selection rules for (100) surfaces of cubic crystals with normally incident circularly polarized light predict 100% spin-polarization in the final state and unambiguously connect the spin character with a particular excitation channel.
