We made this choice because, besides being a statistics of interest in RMT, the distribution of central spacings can be calculated analytically without much difficulty. Of course, it would be possible to choose more than just a pair of central levels. If the number of central levels is small enough, it will make no difference. But, if the levels extend into regions where density is not uniform, it. becomes necessary to implement some sort of unfolding procedure - a complication we preferred to avoid, given that the central spacing is enough for illustrating the averaging scheme in spherically symmetric ensembles.
