In particular, this paper reviews reasons to believe that the BCS mechanism does not produce HTC reviews the numerical searches for superconductivity in the uniform t-J and Hubbard models, reviews the relevant aspects of the theory of the 1D electron gas, especially the LE liquid, and issues concerning the compertition between CDW and SC order in quasi-1D systems.

    • H. Tsunetsugu, M. Troyer, and T. M. Rice, Phys. Rev. B 51, 16 456 (1995), studied arrays of two-leg t-J ladders as a way to understand the physics of the translationally invariant 2D system. Although the model they studied nominally conrresponds to the period 2 case we discuss below, and some of their discussion prefigures the present analysis, the questions asked by these authors were quite different. In particular, they did not consider the mechanism of superconductivity in inhomogeneous 2D systems which we discuss here.
