In this paper, thermoelastic noise is referred to as noise due to thermodynamical fluctuations, because it arises when thermodynamical fluctuations of the distribution of heat inside the test mass produce, via the finite thermal expansion coefficient, changes of the test-mass shape. BGV refer to homogeneous thermal noise as due to Brownian fluctuations because it is caused by a Brownian-motion-type feeding of thermal energy into and out of the test mass's low-order normal modes of vibration.
