The stopping range in gold for 5.9 GeV Pb ions is estimated to be 75.5 μm, while they go through the Kapton leaving the mask with an energy of about 4.5 GeV. In the case of 2.7 GeV 238U ions these numbers are 35 μm and 0.6 GeV, respectively.

From similar experiments carried out in Nb3Ge amorphous films we get an estimation of b=0.5 and ξ+0=0.6a0 which implies that this shift is 1.6% at 10 mT and 0.8% at 40 mT. Martijn Theunissen (private communication).
