    • This value of the angle β ≈ 37° is explained as follows. On the square lattice, the most statistically probable junction of the two crural panicles [Fig. l(a)] corresponds to the head-to-tail configuration, so the vertical cluster axis (going through the first and third quadrants of the coordinate basis) is formed by a stairiike sequence of rnicroblocks where the width and the height of each "stair" is 3d and 4d, respectively. As a result, one obtains tan β = 3d/4d, yielding β = arctan(3/4)≈ 37°.
