A strip with open boundary conditions can be considered as a slice in an infinite array where the superconducting links between the boundary nodes of the strip and the rest of the network are replaced by insulating ones. For the sake of argument, one may consider a gradual weakening of these links from superconducting to insulating. The energy to create a vortex decreases as a result. Consequently, the density of vortices in such a system is expected to increase. For a given current through the system, the first-order effect is an enhanced transverse free vortex flow, leading to a higher voltage. The voltage increase is larger for narrower strips.
