    • Note that facet corner atoms at the periphery of a faceted vacancy cluster are more tightly bound than atoms comprising the facet edge, so vacancy cluster diffusion by nucleation and erosion of facets is a relatively slow process. For the same reason, cluster diffusion by adatom diffusion along the periphery is unfavored as well, since mobile adatoms are confined by the facet corners.

    • The migration energy for surface vacancy diffusion is provided by Nelson et al. [c10]; the prefactor is nνℓ2/2α, where n=6 is the number of jump directions available to the vacancy, ν≈1012 s–1 is the jump attempt frequency, ℓ=a0 is the jump distance to an adjacent site, and α=2 is the dimensionality of the space.
