    • The idea that similar phenomena should take place in small metallic systems belongs, to our knowledge, to K. A. Matveev.

    • A possible argument against this conclusion is that the BCS ground state has inherent fluctuations of N, Ñ apeq sqrt N >> 1, and cannot describe correctly variations of N by 1. However, it is known [14] that by simple integration over the phase of the order parameter one can project the BCS state onto a state with fixed N. An important point here is that such a projection causes only small corrections (prop NS-1) to the superconducting gap and probabilities of energy level occupation, as long as the effective number NS of superconducting electrons, NSapeq ( Δ / curlepF) N, is large, NS>> 1. In other words, this is the case as long as Δ >> delta, where delta is the average spacing of single-particle energy levels. From a general point of view systems with odd and even N can be distinguished since the ground state of the system is, respectively, degenerate or nondegenerate.
