In this review, the authors combine insights from crystal structures of the ribosome with biochemical data, to propose a detailed model for the selection of tRNAs. The model explains at the structural level an impressive number of previous experimental observations. The authors show, in particular, how cognate codon-anticodon interactions can be structurally recognized by two bases in the 16S RNA of the small ribosomal subunit.
