1. World Health Organization. Outcome evaluation summary report: WHO/UNODC Global initiative on primary prevention of substance abuse. Geneva: World Health Organization; 2007. The report offers an overview of country reports worldwide. It is a good comparison of the substance abuse prevention outcomes in communities from each country. Even though the outcomes present a good primary prevention program, the sustainable activity might be so far limited in some areas.
2. Petronyte G, Zaborskis A, Veryga A. Risk factors for alcohol use among youth and main aspects of prevention programs. Medicina (Kaunas) 2007; 43:103-109. The article analyzed the risk factors for alcohol consumption among youth and preventive programs in Lithuania. The preventive program is ineffective and possibilities were not explored. To improve youth mental health, laws and a prevention program are needed.

4. Patel V, Araya R, Chatterjee S, et al. Treatment and prevention of mental disorders in low-income and middle-income countries. Lancet 2007; 370:991-1005. A review in the Lancet Series on Global Mental Health reporting the evidence on effectiveness of interventions for the treatment and prevention of selected mental disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, alcohol-use disorders, and developmental disabilities in low-income and middle-income countries. Some evidence of effectiveness of brief interventions delivered by primary care professionals for management of hazardous alcohol use, and pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for people with alcohol dependence were summarized.
5. Pal HR, Yadav D, Metha S, Mohan I. A comparison of brief intervention versus simple advice for alcohol use disorders in a North India community-based sample followed for 3 months. Alcohol Alcohol 2007; 42:328-332. A comparative study that used blinded evaluation of treatment outcomes on drinking parameters, the Addiction Severity Index, the WHO Quality of Life and readiness to change. Results were promising for brief intervention. Booster sessions were suggested.
6. Borges G, Wang PS, Medina-Mora ME, et al. Delay of first treatment of mental and substance use disorders in Mexico. Am J Public Health 2007; 97:1638-1643. This is a secondary analysis of the data from the Mexican National Comorbidity Survey (2001-2002). It is found that the delay in making the first professional treatment contact was shorter for substance use disorders, than for other mental health disorders, but still longer than 10 years.
7. Lotrakul M, Saipanish R. Psychiatric services in primary care settings: a survey of general practitioners in Thailand. BMC Fam Pract 2006; 7:48. This is a postal questionnaire survey about psychiatric practices and service problems among doctors in primary care settings in Thailand. The survey found that alcohol and drug abuse was the second most common diagnosis made by these doctors.
8. German D, Sherman SG, Sirirojn B, et al. Motivations for methamphetamine cessation among young people in northern Thailand. Addiction 2006; 101:1143-1152. This is a qualitative study among current and recent methamphetamine users aged 15-29 years to identify factors influencing cessation intentions, which found that multiple factors were associated.
9. Tang YL, Zhao D, Zhao C, Cubells JF. Opiate addiction in China: current situation and treatments. Addiction 2006; 101:657-665. This is a review of the current situation of opiate addiction and treatments in China that found opiate dependence increased in the past decade. A methadone maintenance program and modern treatments were not officially available.
10. Siqueira MM, Barbosa DA, Larajeira R, Hopkins K. Psychoactive substances and the provision of specialized care: the case of Espirito Santo. Rev Bras Psiquiatr 2007 [Epub ahead of print]. A survey of all institutions that provided treatment for psychoactive substances in the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil, during the period 2004-2005 was reported, which indicated the noncentralized provision of specialized care for psychoactive substance users.
11. Terra MB, Barros HM, Stein AT, et al. Predictors of engagement in the Alcoholics Anonymous group or to psychotherapy among Brazilian alcoholics: a six-month follow-up study. Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci 2007; 257:237-244. The interviews were conducted among alcoholic patients hospitalized in two mental hospitals and in a drug addiction ward of a general hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The article found that patients with higher educational levels were more likely to engage in the Alcoholics Anonymous group than those with lower levels.
