This study found strong associations of prenatal PCB exposure with behavior (attention and response inhibition) in New York children born to mothers who ate contaminated Great Lakes fish. This is an important corroboration of similar findings in Michigan infants (Lake Michigan fish eaters' children) and, more importantly, underscores the likely sensitivity of child behavior to early life PCB exposures.

Gray KA, Klebanoff MA, Brock JW, et al. In utero exposure to background levels of polychlorinated biphenyls and cognitive functioning among school-age children. Am J Epidemiol 2005; 162:17-26. This analysis did not find associations of IQ at ages 4 or 7 with prenatal PCB exposure among a large sample of Collaborative Perinatal Project infants. Thus, the study did not confirm findings in the other major published study of IQ among Michigan 11-year-olds and adds to uncertainty regarding the relation of PCBs with childhood IQ. An apparent association of PCBs with higher IQ at age 4 years also identified the potential for residual confounding to affect PCB analyses. For example, in contrast to much of the childhood lead exposure literature, PCB exposure is associated with sociodemographic advantage in some populations and thus residual confounding by these factors may attenuate associations

This is an important example of a relatively new study focused on HCB exposures, an area for which there has been limited prior human research. The finding of behavioral associations, particularly social competence and ADHD symptoms, with prenatal HCB exposure is an association for which further study is merited and which confirms the potential sensitivity of child behavior to early life organochlorine exposure.
