This paper uses a large community-based sample to show that CRP, fibrinogen, Factor VII, Factor VIII, interleukin-6, plasmin-antiplasmin complex and D-dimer are higher in subjects with CKD.

This analysis of 7317 non-diabetic adults shows that participants with reduced creatinine clearance and albuminuria had higher CRP levels.
26. Menon V, Wang X, Greene T, et al. Relationship between C-reactive protein, albumin, and cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease. Am J Kidney Dis 2003; 42:44-52. This paper shows that inflammation is not inevitable in CKD. CRP levels in baseline samples from the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study did not differ from a population-based mean, and no trend by GFR was found. Higher CRP was associated with lower serum albumin and with prevalent CVD.

The severity of secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic renal insufficiency is GFR-dependent, race-dependent, and associated with cardiovascular disease. J Am Soc Nephrol 2002; 13:2762-2769. This is a referral center-based study of 218 patients (80% in CKD stage 3 or 4) showing a strong inverse association between estimated GFR and intact PTH. African Americans had higher PTH levels and a steeper increase with lower estimated GFRs than white subjects.

This subgroup analysis of a randomized clinical trial showed similar benefits at different levels of baseline kidney function.

Lancet 2003; 361:2024-2031. This is the first large trial of statins in transplant recipients, and suggests a protective effect by fluvastatin that is similar to that in other populations.
