Relationship between C-reactive protein, albumin, and cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease
-
Menon V, Wang X, Greene T, et al. Relationship between C-reactive protein, albumin, and cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease. Am J Kidney Dis 2003; 42:44-52. This paper shows that inflammation is not inevitable in CKD. CRP levels in baseline samples from the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study did not differ from a population-based mean, and no trend by GFR was found. Higher CRP was associated with lower serum albumin and with prevalent CVD.

J Am Soc Nephrol 2002; 13:2762-2769. This is a referral center-based study of 218 patients (80% in CKD stage 3 or 4) showing a strong inverse association between estimated GFR and intact PTH. African Americans had higher PTH levels and a steeper increase with lower estimated GFRs than white subjects.
