This study focuses on the sense of suffering among patients with advanced cancer, investigating its causes and correlates. The authors find that many patients with advanced cancer do not consider themselves as suffering. For those who did, the experience related most strongly to physical symptoms.

The study sought to determine the rates and predictors of distress in a sample of patients attending a multidisciplinary lung cancer clinic. Over half (61.6%) of patients reported distress at a clinically significant level.

A survey on a large sample of outpatients of selected clinics of a regional cancer centre to estimate prevalence of clinically significant distress using HADS touch screen computers. A total of 674 out of 3071 patients met the criteria for clinically significant distress.

This paper reports data on the psychometric properties of the Brief Edinburgh Depression Scale and concludes that the six-item EDS is a brief and sensitive method of screening for depression in patients with advanced cancer.
8. Payne A, Barry S, Creedon B, et al. Sensitivity and specificity of a two-question screening tool for depression in a specialist palliative care unit. Palliat Med 2007; 21:193-198. The two-item screening questions for depression in cancer were validated against a formal psychiatric interview on a prospective sample (167) revealing a sensitivity of 90.7% but a lower specificity of 67.7%. The authors concluded that this tool would aid professionals in identifying depression in a palliative care unit.
9. Mehnert A, Koch U. Prevalence of acute and posttraumatic stress disorder and co morbid mental disorders in breast cancer patients during primary cancer care: a prospective study. Psychooncology 2007; 16:181-188. This trial using structured clinical interviews on 127 patients showed that prevalence rates were 2.4% for both cancer-related acute stress disorder and PTSD.

A prospective pilot study using standardized testing by diagnostic interview was used to determine major depression and alcoholism in 24 patients with advanced head and neck cancer.
