Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-specific CD8+ T(EMRA) cells in early infection are linked to control of HIV-1 viremia and predict the subsequent viral load set point. J Virol 2007; 81:5759-5765. One of the limitations of studies that aim to correlate T-cell responses with control of viremia is that it is difficult to discern whether the control of viremia is a consequence of the particular T-cell response or vice versa. This study set out to test the hypothesis that the HIV-1-specific CD8+ T-cell phenotype early in infection predicts control of HIV-1 viral replication.

Blood 2007; 109:4296-4305. In response to viral exposition, particular genetic or regulated features of the NK-cell-receptor repertoire of exposed uninfected individuals contribute to their NK-cell potential. This finding might allow NK cells to generate a more rapid and effective immune response to HIV-1, thereby contributing to prevention of infection.

Allotypes of the NK-cell receptor KIR3DL1 vary in both NK-cell expression patterns and inhibitory capacity upon binding to their ligands, HLA-B Bw4 molecules, present on target cells. Using a sample size of more than 1500 individuals with HIV, the authors show that various distinct allelic combinations of the KIR3DL1 and HLA-B loci strongly influence plasma HIV RNA levels.
