In this study quantitative measurements are obtained on UBM images of the superior and inferior angle to try and ascertain the cause of the asymmetry of angle width between the two quadrants. Several parameters including ARA, trabecular-ciliary process distance and angle recess-iris insertion difference showed significantly smaller values for the superior quadrant and a more posterior iris insertion was demonstrated in the inferior angle quadrant. These differences result in a different pattern of appositional angle closure in the two quadrants.

He M, Friedman DS, Ge J, et al. Laser peripheral iridotomy in eyes with narrow drainage angles: ultrasound biomicroscopy outcomes. The Liwan Eye Study. Ophthalmology 2007; 114:1513-1519. This study is a UBM study of Chinese people with appositional angle closure (or iridotrabecular contact) undergoing laser iridotomy treatment. It reports that 59% (42/72) of patients still had at least one quadrant of closure postiridotomy. Quantitative analysis of the UBM images showed that a number of characteristics of the angle including a thick iris, more anteriorly positioned ciliary body and more anterior iris insertion were associated with residual angle closure following laser.

Detection of primary angle-closure using anterior segment optical coherence tomography in Asian eyes

This article is the first to compare AS-OCT and gonioscopy in diagnosing primary angle closure in a large number of patients. It shows that AS-OCT classifies a greater number of eyes has having angle closure than gonioscopy. This paper highlights the influence of illumination on angle width
