    • This comparison becomes possible since at high photon energies the step height is set by the atomic cross section, which can be assumed to be the same regardless of the state of the N2 molecule. Furthermore, since the molecules are randomly distributed in the gas phase, an XA spectrum recorded at 45 ° incidence had to be used for the adsorbate. The pi resonance of this spectrum was identical to the spectrum recorded at normal incidence.
