    • 2O and filtered through celite. The celite bed was washed with EtOAc. The combined filtrate and washings were extracted with EtOAc. The residue, obtained after evaporation, afforded a mixture of exo-methylene β-lactam and the cis-β-lactam. These two were easily separated by column chromatography over silica gel using hexane-EtOAc (4:1) as eluent.
