The θ transition is usually a liquid transition between the coil state and the globular state and it may be of first or of second order. For particularly stiff polymers, the globular state is absent and one observes a direct transition to a solid crystalline phase. See, e.g., EULEEJ 0295-5075, (), J. Chem. Phys. JCPSA6 0021-9606 108, 2134 (1998), and references therein.
