Editor's note: First Monday was published between May 1996 and December 1998 by Munksgaard International Publishers of Copenhagen. Between May 1996 and May 1997, Munksgaard charged an optional subscription fee of 100 Danish kroner, which at the time was equivalent to approximately US $15.00, Payment of the subscription fee provided to the subscriber a compact disc of a year's worth of First Monday. No fee was required to access the First Monday server and access was open and free. At an editorial meeting In Copenhagen in May 1997, Munksgaard, at the urging of First Monday's primary editors, Edward Valauskas, Esther Dyson, and Rishab Ghosh-dropped the optional subscription fee and made the journal completely open and free. In December 1998, Munsgaard sold First Monday to the editorial triumvirate of Valauskas, Dyson, and Ghosh; the server was moved from Copenhagen to Chicago and the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
