His research interests are in the history of public policy in the UK and the USA and his many publications include Underclass:a History of the Excluded, 1880-2000 (2006, Continuum, London). His book From Transmitted Deprivation to Social Exclusion: Policy, Poverty, and Parenting (Bristol, Policy Press, forthcoming) will be published in September 2007.
