Less generic situations occur either, when Ftot (x) exhibits an upward cusp in the interval between x1 and x2 (first order phase transition) or, when it has downward cusps at x1 or x2 (the chemical potential crosses a gap in the density of states). In the former case, the spinodal region may be reduced to a single point. In the later case, one or two metastable regions may be reduced to a point.
