The red blood cell damage is a result of photosensitization by the drug. The red blood cells and photosensitization drug are combined in the presence of light for a specified light dose. After 24 h in the dark the amount of hemoglobin released from the damaged cells was measured. Human whole blood (0.75 mL) was washed three times in TBS.
