This cites as the first English use of 'hemiopia' in a medicaI dictionary appearing in 1811; 'hemiopia' and 'hemianopsia' are cited from W Stirling's translation of Landois's Human Physiology, dated 1885. In this citation, 'hemiopia' was used to identify the retinal impairment and hemianopsia to identify the field defect. The term hemiopia was soon dropped; the field defect was termed hemianopia by many British authors, while American writers tended to use the term hemianopsia.
