She sharply criticizes the nationalist assumptions inherent in his work and calls for their relinquishment by subsequent generations of scholars of Judaism, who are still' dominated by this gigantic personality' (p. 213), since their logical consequence is 'a definitive loss of faith in the possibility that the Jews might ever coexist with a non-Jewish world in modern democracies' (p. 218).
