To our knowledge such a rearrangement is unprecedented with aromatic carbonyl compounds. In fact, it was discounted for o-phthalaldehyde in view of the involved sacrifice of aromatic resonance energy, hus, the present findings may have implications for the long raging controversy about the mechanism of the photoreactions of this substrate also; see
