For example [Ni(cyclam)]2+ catalyses the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO;M. P., Beley, J. P., Sauvage, J. Chem. Soc., Chem. Commun., 1984, 1315. This reduction has also been performed photochemically, using [Ru(bipy)3]2+ as a photosensitiser, [Ni(cyclam)]2+ as the catalyst, and ascorbic acid as a sacrificial electron donor

5-Bromomethyl-2, 2′-bipyridyl was made essentially by the method ofJ. G., Eaves, H. S., Munro, D., Parker, J. Chem. Soc., Chem. Commun., 1985, 684, except that the free radical reaction was initiated by a Xenon lamp. The product was isolated from the reaction mixture by crystallisation from diethyl ether. (CAUTION! In common with other halomethyl pyridines, 5-bromomethyl-2,2′-bipyridyl is an extreme irritant.)
