    • Former crown land was often sold at prices that would induce buyers to take expensive loans. Entrance fees and rents on tenant holdings on the other hand were rather moderate and from the 16th (rents) and the end of the 17th century (entrance fees) regulated by law. Although increasing demands for land in the 18th century saw illegally high entrance fees, buying land does not seem to have been economically sounder than renting a tenant holding. For a closer discussion of this problem see J. R. Myking, Herre over andre si jord? Norske leiglendingsvilkår i europeisk lys 1500-1800. Dr. art. dissertation.
