    • For those interested in reading more on these issues, one of the best descriptive histories of productivity improvement, and a book that promotes the thesis of experiment, is Work and Your Future: Living Poorer, Working Harder by William T. Morris (Reston 1975). Two good books that cover the activities leading to improved work quality and motivation are The Motivation Crisis, Winding Down and Turning Off by John Hinrichs (AMACOM 1974) and Louis E. Davis and Albert B. Cherns's The Quality of Workinglife, Volume l, (Free Press 1975). Hinrich talks mostly about the nature of work, while Davis and Cherns talk mostly about experiments in production-type activities because, frankly, that is where most of the action has been. On learning, I find Self-Directed Learning: A Guide for Learners and Teachers by Malcom Knowles (Association Press 1975) a book that helps the individual to understand and direct his or her own learning.
