    • (to be published) have presented a formulation of the steady state hydrodynamics of suspensions of spheres based on a hierarchy approach. They consider impenetrable spheres with a prescribed average drift velocity while we study penetrable Brownian spheres. (The impenetrable case in our formulation just involves more complicated integrals. The leading term can be evaluated analytically and gives [formula omitted] The higher terms may be written as a rapidly covergent series expansion for the exact [formula omitted] and this series is presently being evaluated).

    • While hierarchy and multiple scattering methods have been related in other contexts ( ), no direct relationships have been established for the present problem despite the fact that the two methods appear to utilize related physical ideas. The complexity of the problem makes a detailed comparison rather difficult. Both theories are approximate. Ours ignores the correlated scattering terms (which are now being evaluated by us) while Mou and Adelman introduce approximations by virtue of hierarchy truncations.
