    • We cannot rule out the possibility that structural defects could obscure the presence of any antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling. In particular, subtle defects such as pinholes from one magnetic layer to the next could give rise to large direct exchange coupling which could overwhelm the much smaller indirect coupling.

    • Note that antiferromagnetic coupling has been observed in molecular-beam-epitaxy grown Fe/Cu/Fe sandwiches with a coupling strength comparable to that which we find in sputtered Co/Cu multilayers [see, and Ref. 6].
