note
-
As a result of the repump laser, it is estimated that greater than 99% of the cold Rb87 atoms in the MOT are cycling between the 5 s1/2, F=2 and 5 p3/2, F=3 states. Thus, when the trapping and repump lasers are turned off, nearly all of the atoms will relax to the 5 s1/2, F=2 state.

Note that the lifetime of the Rb(4 d3/2,5/2) state is approximately 94 ns, considerably longer than that of the Rb(5p) state.
