    • The sign of partial σ / partial V can be deduced from experiments yielding pressure derivatives of elastic constan, tabulated by, imply a negative value for Na, K, Cu, and Ag, and a slightly positive value for Al. However, Slater (Ref. 3) argues that since metals are expected to become more metal-like with increasing volume, and since σ apeq case 1 over 3 for metals and σ = 1/2 for liquids, partial σ / partial V should be positive.
