J Gastrointest Surg 2006; 10:1392-1396. 155 patients older than 59 years and 12 patients younger than 19 years in the Mayo database of bariatric surgery were studied. Among the elderly patients, 14% had delayed discharge, one patient (0.7%) died within 30 days of operation, and the 5-y mortality was 5%. Among the adolescents, there were no serious complications or deaths.

The average weight reduction was 53% and most patients had considerable improvements in comorbidities, self-esteem, and activity levels.

Almost 20 000 patients undergoing gastric bypass in Florida between 1999 and 2003 were reviewed for mortality and complications; the overall rates were 0.28% and 9.3%, respectively. Surgeons and hospitals with high had lower rates of mortality and complications.

In this study, all 7868 patients in New York state undergoing bariatric surgery during an 11-month period in 2003 were analysed. Most patients (52%) stayed in hospital for 3-4 days, 34% stayed in hospital for 1-2 days. There was a 7.6% readmission rate, which correlated with the initial duration of stay.
