Optical absorption: The Kodak Infrared Optical Materials brochure U-72 (reprinted? 1981) lists the absorption coefficient of IRTRAN 2 (ZnS) as a function of wavelength. Data appear to be derived from the work of Hatch (ref. 17) in which the minimum emittance of 0.38-cm-thick IRTRAN 2 in the 5-8 urn region is -0.02. We can estimate the absorption coefficient from the relation ε ≈ 1-e-αb, where e is emittance, a is the absorption coefficient (cm-1, and b is the thickness cm, From ε, 0.02 and b, 0.38 cm, we compute α, 0.05 cm-1. The Kodak brochure lists α ≈ 0.07 cm-1 in the 5-8 μm region
