The disparity among several group rates or percentages can be measured using an index of disparity that summarizes the differences among the groups. Although the percentage difference measures disparity from the rate of the best group for individual groups, an index of disparity can be used to measure the disparity between several groups and the best group. An index of disparity provides a way to determine whether the disparity between several groups is getting larger or smaller relative to the rate of the best group. The formula for an index of disparity is a ratio defined as follows: The denominator is the number of groups minus 1 (because this statistic is based on the average of percentage differences from the rate of the best group, and the numerator is the sum of the percentage differences for each group rate of interest so the summation index runs from1 to n-1,where n is the number of groups, See also Keppel et al, Measuring Progress in Healthy People 201
