Assessment and treatment of depression in patients with cardiovascular disease: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute working group report
-
Davidson KW, Kupfer DJ, Bigger JT, et al. Assessment and treatment of depression in patients with cardiovascular disease: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute working group report. Ann Behav Med 2006; 32:121-126. This is one of the few published articles to address depression screening and treatment in patients with medical illness, specifically CHD. The authors summarize the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's recommendations for treatment of depression in patients CHD based on the findings of an expert consensus panel. The panel recommended specific measures for depression screening (i.e. Patient Health Questionnaire) and assessment (e.g. Beck Depression Inventory). It further recommended that additional studies were needed to determine whether medications, psychotherapy, or both can reduce the risk for CHD events and mortality.

Supportive Care Guidelines Group of Cancer Care Ontario Program in Evidence-Based Care. The treatment of depression in cancer patients: A systematic review
-
Rodin G, Lloyd N, Katz M, et al., Supportive Care Guidelines Group of Cancer Care Ontario Program in Evidence-Based Care. The treatment of depression in cancer patients: a systematic review. Support Care Cancer 2007; 15:123-136. This is a thorough review of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions for the treatment of depression in cancer patients. Two trials detected a significant reduction in depressive symptoms for mianserin. For nonpharmacological therapies, two trials found that multicomponent nurse delivered interventions were effective for depression treatment. The review concluded that combined approaches to treatment of depressionmay be the most effective in managing comorbid depression in patients with cancer.
