International Perspectives on Transnational Migration: An Introduction

This does not rule out the possibility that such dualities existed earlier; it was simply more challenging for immigrants to do so. Kivisto (22) also cites Will Kymlicka's point that the four prerequisites for the functioning and integration of a multicultural society - in effect, the ground rules groups and mainstream society both must accept - are "public spiritedness," a "sense of justice," "civility and tolerance," and a "shared sense of solidarity or loyalty." Akin to this has been the recent pressures on American Muslims to demonstrate their commitment to American principles by explicitly disavowing terrorism as a legitimate part of Islamic teachings. In July 2005, American Muslim leaders did issue a fatwa, judicial ruling, following the bombings in London, and declared that Islam condemns extremism and violence against civilians.
