Collins SP, Lindsell CJ, Peacock WF, et al.: The combined utility of an S3 heart sound and B-type natriuretic peptide levels in emergency department patients with dyspnea. J Card Fail 2006, 12:286-292. This study demonstrates that an electronically detected S3 is highly specific for heart failure and when used in combination with intermediate BNP levels increase positive LRs and the positive predictive value for the presence of heart failure.
