The initial silica shell was firstly deposited in 2-propanol as solvent and further grown in ethanol. The reason for that is based on our observation (in previous silica-coating experiments of rodlike particles) of a slight tendency to the formation of dumbbells when the silica shell was further grown by means of the Stöber method in 2-propanol.
