This histopathological study of peripheral nerves in PNL, employing immunoperoxidase staining with antibodies against neural markers of axons, showed the highly destructive axonal degeneration evidenced by the reduced immunohistochemical expression of neural markers.

28. Santoro L, Manganelli F, Briani C, et al. Prevalence and characteristics of peripheral neuropathy in hepatitis C virus population. J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 2006; 77:626-629. This is an excellent review of peripheral neuropathy in HCV infection. The authors studied 234 untreated patients with HCV infection in seven Italian centres. The prevalence of SPN was 10.6% and there was no difference in the risk of SPN between cryoglobulin positive and negative patients.

This paper outlines that the HCV infection is an important health problem in underdeveloped countries. The prevalence of peripheral neuropathy associated with HCV infection was 14.1%.
